ARTWORKS inaugurates its collaboration with Enterprise Projects and supports the making of the upcoming EP Journal issues commissioned to some of SNF ARTWORKS curatorial Fellows.
EPJ x ARTWORKS collaboration begins with the publication of the 7th EP Journal written by SNF ARTWORKS Curatorial Fellow 2019, Mare Spanoudaki.
Xenia Kalpaktsoglou, independent curator and member of our visual arts selection committee, presented her work through a lecture performance she put together for our current cohort of Fellows. Moving between informal historiography and anecdotal storytelling, she demonstrated bits and pieces from past talks, feedback from peers and shared considerable information about her overall professional experience in the art world.
A heartfelt thank you to Xenia for taking the time to prepare such a stimulating lecture and to everyone who attended.
Xenia Kalpaktsoglou (1974) is a curator and a founding member of the Athens-based collective Laboratory for the Urban Commons (Neo Cosmos). Her curatorial practice is rooted in collaboration, the creation of (trans-)local projects and initiatives, and in the reconsideration of the protocols of exchange and production between cultural producers and institutions/organizations. She co-founded the Athens Biennale and co-directed it from 2005–2016; during those years she was primarily active with the curatorial team XYZ. Between 2006-2008 she was the director of the DESTE Foundation. She is currently a PhD candidate at the Artistic Research department at the Zurich University of the Arts / Linz University of the Arts.
Tina Pandi, art historian, curator at the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) and member of our visual arts selection committee, welcomed us at EMST and talked to us about her role as an institutional curator, the curatorial considerations from such point of view, the evaluation criteria when producing an exhibition versus its intrinsic value and much more.
Following her talk, Tina gave us an exhibition tour of Eleni’s Bagaki solo show “Something like a poem, a nude, and flowers in a vase”. Gladly, our dear Fellow, Eleni–SNF ARTWORKS Visual Arts Fellow 2020–joined the tour and we had the chance to hear from both of them about their collaboration and behind the scenes stories.
Kicking off our series of talks “With Earth in Mind” curated and moderated by Daphne Dragona with the visual artist Mikhail Karikis.
“With Earth in Mind”
What changes when the focus of artistic and curatorial practices is the planet itself? How are projects, exhibitions and events created with and for the Earth and its ecosystems? What role can art play in addressing the climate crisis and asserting climate justice?
“With Earth in Mind” hosts art professionals whose work has been created with and for the Earth and its ecosystems and has been dedicated to environmental issues with the aim of provoking not only discussions but also substantial changes. The program of talks is curated and moderated by Daphne Dragona, independent curator and member of the 5th SNF Artist Fellowship Program selection committee for curating.
Artist Talk: MIkhail Karikis
During his presentation, Mikhail elaborated on the methodologies he implements when developing his projects in collaboration with different communities. He touched upon various ideas around socially engaged art and talked about the act of listening as an alternative mode of imaginary activism. Mikhail’s talk was followed by a Q&A session with Daphne Dragona and our Fellows The first in-depth presentation of Mikhail Karikis’ work in Greece is currently on view at EMST.
Mikhail Karikis is a Greek/British artist based in London and Lisbon. His work in moving image, sound, performance and other media is exhibited in leading contemporary art biennials, museums and film festivals internationally. Through collaborations with individuals and/or communities located beyond the circles of contemporary art and (in recent years) with children, teenagers, young adults and people with disabilities, Karikis develops socially embedded projects that prompt an activist imaginary and rouse the potential to imagine possible or desired futures of self-determination and potency. Centering on listening as an artistic strategy and focusing on themes of social and environmental justice, his projects highlight alternative modes of human action and solidarity, while nurturing critical attention, dignity and tenderness.

We are thrilled to announce that Eva Papamargariti is our Visual Arts Fellow (2019) who got selected for a 3-month residency program at LUMA Arles.
During her residency, Eva will explore the connection between the greater Arles region and its bodies of water -the Rhône River and the Mediterranean- both vital to the ontology and history of the place, while a constant state of transformation and sympoiesis of organisms, bodies, flows, mythologies, systems of exchange, visible as well as invisible traces is in full swing.
Eva’s residency is supported by ARTWORKS through its founding donor the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).

SNF ARTWORKS Curatorial Fellow 2022 Akis Kokkinos will depart for Istanbul this week to join the SAHA curatorial residency program. During his residency he aspires to gain valuable insights into the dynamic Turkish artistic scene with the aim to connect with artists and curators who may contribute to upcoming DEO projects, where transnational dialogue across borderland cultures in the neighboring countries is being fostered.
Good luck with everything Akis!
You can find more info about SAHA Association here.
Sofia Stevi, visual artist and SNF ARTWORKS Fellow 2022, was the one who got selected and about to begin her residency at the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) in New York! During her residency, Sofia will fuel her practice and conduct research about sculpture-books. She is keen to explore how image and color can be integrated into her own sculpture-books and how her artworks can be elevated as tactile objects.
Wishing you the best of luck Sofia in this new adventure!

On Wednesday November 22, we met along with our Fellows, George Stamboulis, the Founder of ArtVolt, who presented the mission and activities of the company which, through a digital platform, helps users in navigating the contemporary art world, encompassing artists, art fairs, museums, art institutions, galleries, and more. The reception was held at the Alekos Fassianos Museum where the museum’s director Victoria Fassianou introduced us to the newly founded museum at the center of Athens.
Thank you ArtVolt and Alekos Fassianos Museum for the very warm welcome :)
We are thrilled to continue our collaboration with The New Centre for Research & Practice and offer to all the SNF ARTWORKS Fellows from the previous five cycles of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Artist Fellowship Program the complimentary participation in all the seminars provided at the New Centre platform and the free access to the New Centre’s archive!
The New Centre for Research & Practice central mandate has been to provide new possibilities for learning, especially those who practice their work outside or in-between existing institutional frameworks in the Arts, Humanities, & Sciences. As the New Centre states, Technological developments of the last few decades not only are fundamentally changing the way knowledge is disseminated in the global society but transforming the very idea of knowledge if not also how we remunerate and award knowledgeability to individuals.
Providing research and educational opportunities to SNF ARTWORKS Fellows and engaging them with art professionals from all over the world is a key aspiration of ARTWORKS.
We had the pleasure to welcome the current SNF interns to our office where we gave them a brief presentation of ARTWORKS and the work we do through the SNF Artist Fellowship Program. Following our discussion, we accompanied the participants to the studios of our dear SNF ARTWORKS Visual Arts Fellows: Petros Moris, Theodoros Giannakis and Rania Bellou. Each artist presented selected artworks and talked about the inspiration and rationale behind their work and research. Once again, a big thank you to our Fellows for always being such great company and for sharing interesting concepts and ideas.
