LIQUID JUNCTIONS / MEDITERRANEA 19 X ARTWORKS

ARTWORKS, with the support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), partners with the Biennale of Young Artists – MEDITERRANEA 19 – School of Waters , joining the Expanded Public Program Digital Swamp which will take place in various Mediterranean cities. The aim of this Program is to activate a network of discussions and actions around the thematic School of Waters. Specificatlly, ARTWORKS will support the SNF ARTWORKS Fellows who have been selected to take part in the Biennale (Ionian Bisai, Eva Papamargariti, Valinia Svoronou and Chara Stergiou) by organizing two events entitled Liquid Junctions.

On Wednesday, May 19th, at 6 p.m. (local time), ARTWORKS will be hosting an online event which will be livestreamed at mediterraneabiennial.org and through the School of Waters Youtube account. Two separate conversations will take place between the guests speakers Ella Finer and Chuz Martinez, the participant artists (Eva Papamargariti, Valinia Svoronou and Chara Stergiou) and members of the curatorial group of Biennale, Panos Giannikopoulos and Angeliki Tzortzakaki, aiming to activate a network of discussions and actions around the thematic School of Waters.

On Friday, June 4, at 7 p.m. local time, ARTWORKS will hold a public event at the SNFCC Dome in order to support and showcase the work of all SNF ARTWORKS Fellows selected to participate in the Biennale (Ionian Bisai, Eva Papamargariti, Valinia Svoronou and Chara Stergiou). Liquid Junctions will include a DJ lecture by Hara Stergiou; a performative reading by Quinn Latimer and presentations of the works of Eva Papamargaritis, Valinia Svoronou and the artistic duo Latent Community (Ionian Bisai and Sotiris Tsiganos).

Between May 15 and October 31, 2021, MEDITERRANEA 19 School of Waters will be presenting the work of 70 artists from 21 Mediterranean countries for the first time in San Marino. The MEDITERRANEA 19 School of Waters envisions the Biennale as a collective tool for deconstructing stereotypes stemming from the Eurocentric interpretation of the Mediterranean basin, focusing particularly on the material and symbolic nature of water from a geopolitical as well as an ecological perspective. It is an invitation to discover anew the fluidity that has turned the Mediterranean basin into a versatile habitat in which various life forms and knowledge-production processes have coexisted for centuries.

The participating artists place the focus on ecofeminism and examine the major ethical and economic roots of environmental issues. Inspired by mythology, science fiction, contemporary history and examining the matter through the prism of complex marine ecosystems, they challenge human superiority and navigate the notions of feeling and thinking in more-than-human worlds.

Chara Stergiou’s interdisciplinary practice develops at the junction between epistemological research and artistic practice. Stergiou’s DJ Lectures are hybrid narrative techniques for disseminating stories, geographies, and identities based on non-locality and can be seen as sonic, almost radiophonic, events to be transmitted through the lens of a deviated ethnomusicology.

Eva Papamargariti uses time-based media, printed material and sculptural installations to explore the relationship between digital space and material reality. Papamargariti focuses on the dialectics of fluidity, motion, as well as the relationship between bodies and the traces they leave behind as they float, sink, disperse, get cast in and out of water.

The work of the artistic duo Latent Community (Jonian Bisai and Sotiris Tsiganos) combines fieldwork and moving image to tackle contemporary judicial, social and ecological issues. The duo aims to create conceptual and emotional experiences through which a more equal and sustainable future may be imagined. Their research focuses on the critical reading of non-canonical stories and examines the ways in which these become embedded in new contexts.

Valinia Svoronou’s practice includes text, moving image, augmented reality applications, publications, prints and sculpture. Using references from science fiction and mythology, she navigates alternative ways of remembering or narrating stories from a non-dominant perspective.

As part of Liquid Junctions, guest poet and critic Quinn Latimer will hold a performative reading based on her work The Samos Lecture (Like a Woman: Essays, Readings, Poems). Combining live performance and the written word, Latimer’s work examines issues of genealogy and influence, the poverty and privilege of place, as well as feminist economies of writing, reading, and art-making. She will also present her film How to Move Like the Ocean (Liquefaction, Lubrication & Expansion in Twelve Easy Steps), created in collaboration with Temitope Ajose-Cutting in 2020. In this work, the two artists ask a series of questions, for example: in times of isolation, what do we lack? How do we learn? What is a body, and what is a body of water?

The Mediterranean Biennale 19 School of Waters, organised by BJCEM – Biennale des Jeunes Créateurs de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée and the Republic of San Marino will present from 15 May to 31 October 2021 the works of over 70 artists from 21 different countries, hosted for the first time by the Republic of San Marino.

MYTHOLOGIES | NEW TERRAINS

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre (SNFCC) welcomes summer at the Dome by transforming it, in collaboration with ARTWORKS, into a welcoming new terrain – a meeting place for the public, featuring works of contemporary art that propose modern readings of Greek mythology in an inventive architectural design.

MYTHOLOGIES | NEW TERRAINS exhibition at the SNFCC Dome comprises sculptures, installations and an augmented reality application that explore our age-old complex relationship with mythology, assessing its relevance to our reality and its potential to push the limits of our imagination. A total of 13 works of contemporary art are juxtaposed to the scale of the Dome itself – mythical figures emerge in a new version of cosmogony, pointing to the sub-terrain, the archaeological past, the technological and digital realms, and science fiction. Eleni Papanastasiou’s architectural design includes a highly mobile seating system that encourages non-hierarchical, unguided movement around the exhibits and creates a feeling that the body finds itself in the center of a sphere.

Four contemporary artists –Theodoros Giannakis, Petros Moris, Panos Profitis, Valinia Svoronou– exhibit works that contain direct mythological references and propose new interpretations of ancient archetypes. The artists attempt to unveil the mechanisms by which beliefs we now take for granted have been constructed and consolidated. At the same time, the artworks on view examine the function of myth, its relationship with the notions of nature and culture and the use of myth in the narrative of current events, while recalling the often-subversive power of mythology. The artists observe the ever-shifting condition of myth and suggest surprising, playful and constructive ways to challenge dominant narratives; they appropriate and rewrite the body of myth, blazing new aesthetic paths to new terrains.

The exhibition is organized by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) in collaboration with ARTWORKS.

EXHIBITION “Unhappy Monuments”

The exhibition “Unhappy Monuments” features 14 of the visual artists awarded the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Artist Fellowship 2019 by ARTWORKS. Inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s Unhappy Readymade (1919), the exhibition curator asked the participating artists to contemplate the notion of the anti-monument. Contrary to the permanent, monumental and venerable characteristics of monuments, the anti-monument is temporary, fragile; it does not seek to capture the viewer’s attention, while often requiring the viewer’s participation. The artworks created by the artists specifically for this exhibition, converse with the aesthetic identity and character of the Eleftherias Park, which is a popular leisure spot for Athenians. The exhibition “Unhappy Monuments” primarily aims to bring into view unusual monuments, allowing them to be discovered by the audience during their leisurely walks in the Park.

Exhibition : Hypercomf | Marine Caves and Benthic Terrazzo @ SNFCC

As part of the collaboration between the SNFCC and ARTWORKS, the work of the artistic collective Hypercomf is presented within the framework of the SNFCC Green Weekend at the Stavros Niarchos Park. Hypercomf is a multidisciplinary group engaged in contemporary art, design, and ecological discourse. The exhibition Hypercomf | Marine Caves and Benthic Terrazzo is presented as part of the SNFCC Green Weekend at the Stavros Niarchos Park.

Hypercomf presents twenty prints from the Benthic Terrazzo series at the Perimeter of the Stavros Niarchos Park. The work explores the challenges faced by marine ecosystems today and the threats that emerge for the future, combining scientific field research, film production, prototype design, and public workshops. The goal is to enhance the understanding of human impact on the ocean and to seek solutions that could mitigate the consequences of human activity.

In collaboration with marine biologist Markos Digenis, the team studied the ecosystems of the marine caves of Crete and documented how our everyday domestic activities leave their traces on the seabed, forming the future fossils of an archaeology to come. At the core of the research is the Benthic Terrazzo, a series of tiles inspired by Venetian terrazzo mosaic. Hypercomf’s practice replaces part of the sand and cement with marine pollutants—plastic objects, microplastics, nets, and ropes—incorporating them into an upcycling process that can be easily reproduced. Each tile draws its aesthetic from underwater photographic impressions of sea caves, creating connections between human homes and marine habitats.

Hypercomf continues to evolve the technique through larger applications and open workshops in coastal and island areas, aiming to support the reuse of plastic waste from beach cleanups.

The exhibited series was created between 2020 and 2022 as part of the Studiotopia program, hosted by the Onassis Foundation Stegi and co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union, with scientific advisory by Markos Digenis and material support from BlueCycle.

Paola Palavidi and Ioannis Koliopoulos, founders of Hypercomf, have been awarded the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Artist Fellowship by ARTWORKS in 2018.
